Find out why you should not eat curd at night?

Curd is an important part of an Indian diet, mainly if you ask people living in South India. There it is almost equivalent to a staple, a thing which you can’t live without. The people enjoy curd with rice, in desserts, and in beverages too. If you don’t like milk, curd works as a great alternative. Curd has an immediate cooling effect on the body, which could also be one of the main reasons behind its popularity in South India. It is a storehouse of bacteria and helps in the digestion. It is also good for your heart. Because of high phosphorous and calcium content, it does wonders for bone and teeth health.

Yet some doctor’s advice against having an extremely nutritious bowl of curd at a fixed time in a day, mainly during the nights. As per Ayurveda, some food timings and combination of foods can disturb the normal functioning of the body. According to Ayurveda, each person is born with a life force that comprises of five elements or building blocks of nature that includes Air, Earth, Fire, Space, and Water. The human body possesses a unique balance of all these five elements in different degrees. This balance of elements is popular. There are mainly three fundamental doshas including Vata, Kapha, and Pitta, and good health is regarded as the perfect balance between these three.

As per Ayurveda, curd has both sweet and sour properties and it increases Kapha dosha in our body. During the night, there is a natural predominance of Kapha in our body. This imbalance can lead to the development of excess mucus in the nasal passage.  Several people eat curd in different direct and indirect ways at night like having it as kadi, dessert, and raita. So, many people have the question that is it ok to consume curd at night?

Many health practitioners, nutritionists, and certified Health coaches say that it is alright to have curd at night. Only people who are prone to cold, cough, and asthma should avoid it for dinner as it causes mucus. For dinner, choose raita or chaash to help digestion. You can also add fenugreek seeds to calm the stomach when you suffer from indigestion.

Doctors say that if you are prone to flu and cold then it is advisable not to have curd at night. You can have buttermilk instead as it is the best substitute for curd which helps in proper digestion, clears the channels and lessens mucus secretion. People who suffer from asthma and pollen allergies are also advised to avoid curd and curd preparation at night. If you are one among those who are prone to flu and cold, then it is suggested to avoid curd at night.

One can have buttermilk instead of curd as it is one of the best substitutes for curd. It helps in proper digestion, reduces mucus secretion, and clears the channels. People suffering from asthma and pollen grains should also avoid curd or anything prepared with curd at night. It causes a blockage within the breathing pipe and at times can aggravate the symptoms that lead to severe health issues.
